The Common aspen (Populus tremula) is a loose, irregular, picturesque small tree that produces purple-red flowers arranged in catkins. They appear from the beginning of March to mid-March. These produce silver-grey fruits. The Common aspen also has matt, roundish, medium green leaves. Its bark is grey-green and smooth. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 20 metres and grows to a width of around 11 metres.

The shoots of Populus tremula are amber yellow.

The deciduous leaves of Common aspen are medium green, roundish, matt, alternate, toothed. They are about 3 - 8 cm in size. Common aspen turns bright orange-yellow in autumn.

Bark

Grey-green, smooth bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The purple-red flowers of Common aspen appear in catkins from the beginning of March to mid-March.

Root

Populus tremula is a shallow-rooted or heart-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms runner-forming roots.
