The Sargent's cherry (Prunus sargentii) is a spreading, funnel-shaped, picturesque small tree that produces pink, cup-shaped flowers. They appear in April. These produce purple-red, oval fruits from August. The Sargent's cherry also has egg-shaped, medium green leaves. The bronze-coloured shoots are also an interesting sight. Its bark is a glossy red-brown colour. In a sunny, sheltered location with nutrient-rich, sandy, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 12 metres and grows to a width of around 8 metres.

Growth

Sargent's cherry is a spreading, funnel-shaped, picturesque small tree. It usually reaches a height of 6 - 12 m and is approx. 5 - 8 m wide. As a rule, it grows 20 - 30 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Prunus sargentii are smooth, red.

leaves

The deciduous leaves of Sargent's cherry are medium green, ovate, alternate, serrated. They are about 10 - 12 cm tall. Bronze-coloured shoots. Sargent's cherry turns a bright scarlet red in autumn.

Bark

Red-brown, shiny bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The pink-coloured, cupped flowers appear in April.

Root

Prunus sargentii is a deep-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms extensively branching, runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny, sheltered position.

The Sargent's cherry has good frost hardiness.
