The Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) is a cone-shaped tree that produces greenish-yellow flowers. They appear in April. These produce black-blue, oval fruits. The Tupelo also has shiny, egg-shaped, medium green leaves. Its bark is grey. In a sunny to semi-shady location with lime-free, loose, nutrient-rich, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 30 metres and grows to a width of around 15 metres.

Tupelo is a conical growing tree. It usually reaches a height of 10 - 30 m and is approx. 5 - 15 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Nyssa sylvatica are light brown in colour.

The deciduous leaves of Tupelo are medium green, ovate, glossy, alternate, with entire margins. They are about 5 - 13 cm in size. Tupelo turns bright orange-red in autumn.

Bark

Grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

The greenish-yellow flowers appear in April.

Nyssa sylvatica is a taproot.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Tupelo has good frost hardiness.

Nyssa sylvatica thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.
