The Mahaleb Cherry (Prunus mahaleb) is a sprawling, multi-stemmed large shrub with decorative, black, round fruits. It produces white flowers arranged in umbels from April to May. In a sunny location, it usually reaches a height of around 10 metres and is around 10 metres wide. The Mahaleb Cherry makes no particular demands on the soil.

Growth

Mahaleb Cherry is a sprawling, multi-stemmed large shrub with a translucent crown. It usually reaches a height of 4 - 10 m and is approx. 4 - 10 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 40 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Prunus mahaleb are grey-green.

Bark

Grey, fielded, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The white flowers of Mahaleb Cherry appear in umbels from April to May.

Fruit

The black, round drupes of Prunus mahaleb are particularly decorative. These appear from July.

Root

Prunus mahaleb is a deep-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

Frost hardiness

The Mahaleb Cherry has good frost hardiness.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- Watering less frequently, but thoroughly and thoroughly, encourages the plant roots to penetrate deeper into the soil. This enables the plant to survive dry periods better.
