The Alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus) is an upright, dense, slender large shrub with decorative, black-red, round fruits. It produces creamy white flowers from May to June. The Alder buckthorn also has shiny, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to shady location with acidic, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of around 4 metres and is around 3 metres wide.

Growth

Alder buckthorn is an upright, dense and slender large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 4 m and is approx. 1.5 - 3 m wide. It usually grows 20 - 30 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of the Alder buckthorns are dark green, ovate, glossy and alternate. They are about 6 - 7 cm in size. Alder buckthorn is bright golden yellow in autumn.

Bark

Dark brown, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The creamy white flowers appear from May to June.

Fruit

The black-red, round drupes of Frangula alnus are particularly decorative. These appear from July.

Root

Frangula alnus is a deep-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms stoloniferous, sparsely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Alder buckthorn has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Frangula alnus thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.
