The Chocolate vine (Akebia quinata) is a climbing, overhanging garden plant that produces purple-red flowers with a light fragrance. They appear from April to May. Purple-violet, elongated fruits emerge from September. They are large and exude a light fragrance. The Chocolate vine also has palmate, medium green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with nutrient-rich, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 8 metres and grows to around 2 metres wide.

The deciduous leaves of Chocolate vine are medium green, palmate, alternate, with entire margins.

Flower

The purple-red flowers appear from April to May. They are slightly fragrant.

Fruit

Akebia quinata forms purple-violet, large fruits with a sweet flavour. The skin of these elongated fruits is rough. Ripening time from September.

Root

Akebia quinata is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched, runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.
