The Chocolate vine (Akebia quinata) is a climbing, overhanging garden plant that produces purple-red flowers with a light fragrance. They appear from April to May. Purple-violet, elongated fruits emerge from September. They are large and exude a light fragrance. The Chocolate vine also has palmate, medium green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with nutrient-rich, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 8 metres and grows to around 2 metres wide.

Growth

The Five-leaved Akebia is climbing and cascading in growth.

Leaves

The summer-green leaves of the Five-leaved Akebia are medium green, hand-shaped, alternate, and entire-edged.

Flowers

The purple-red flowers appear from April to May and are lightly fragrant.

Fruit

Akebia quinata produces large, purple-violet fruits with a sweet taste. The skin of these elongated fruits is rough. Ripening time starts in September.

Roots

Akebia quinata is a taproot plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched, spreading roots.

Location

Preferred location in sunny to partially shaded, wind-protected areas.
