The Bog myrtle (Myrica gale) is an upright, ovoid, tight small shrub with decorative, brown fruits. It produces amber-yellow flowers arranged in catkins from April to May. The Bog myrtle also has matt, medium green leaves. In a sunny location with humusy, sandy, acidic, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 1.5 m and grows to approx. 1.5 m wide.

Bog myrtle is an upright, ovoid and tightly growing small shrub. It usually reaches a height of 0.5 - 1.5 m and is approx. 0.5 - 1.5 m wide. It usually grows 10 - 25 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Myrica gale are reddish-brown.

The deciduous leaves of Bog myrtle are medium green, matt, alternate. They are about 3 - 6 cm in size. Bog myrtle turns a bright amber-yellow in autumn.

Flower

The amber-yellow flowers of Bog myrtle appear in catkins from April to May.

Fruit

The brown cones of Myrica gale are particularly decorative. The young cones have an amber-yellow colour.

Root

Myrica gale is a heartroot.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

Frost hardiness

The Bog myrtle has good frost hardiness.

Myrica gale thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.
