The Beal's mahonia (Mahonia bealei) is an upright shrub with decorative, blue-grey, round fruits. These exude a pleasant fragrance. It produces light yellow flowers arranged in clusters from March to April. The Beal's mahonia also has leathery, lanceolate, pinnate, blue-green leaves. In a semi-shady to shady, wind-protected location with well-drained, loose, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 2 metres and grows to a width of approx. 2 metres.

The evergreen leaves of the Beal's mahonia are blue-green, lanceolate, pinnate, leathery and toothed. They are about 9 - 15 cm tall.

Flower

The light yellow flowers of the Beal's mahonia appear in clusters from March to April. They are pleasantly fragrant.

Fruit

The blue-grey, round fruits of Mahonia bealei are particularly decorative. These appear from July.

Root

Mahonia bealei is a deep-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in semi-shady to shady, wind-protected position.

Frost hardiness

The Beal's mahonia has good frost hardiness.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- In harsh locations, sun protection is only recommended in the event of frost.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
