The Hawthorn (Crataegus coccinea) is an upright, broad, large shrub with decorative, scarlet-red, round fruits. These exude a strong fragrance. It produces white flowers arranged in panicles in May. The Hawthorn also has egg-shaped, medium-green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 8 metres and grows to around 6 metres wide.

The shoots of Crataegus coccinea are spiny.

The deciduous leaves of the Hawthorns are medium green, ovate, alternate, serrated. They are about 5 - 7 cm in size. Hawthorn is bright orange-yellow in autumn.

Bark

Dark brown, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The white flowers of Hawthorn appear in panicles in May. These are strongly scented.

Fruit

The scarlet-red, round fruits of Crataegus coccinea are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Root

Crataegus coccinea is a deep-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms sparsely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Hawthorn has good frost hardiness.
