Plant of the Month October 2025: Japanische Zelkove – Powerful Tree with Asian Flair

The Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata) is one of the most distinctive ornamental trees for large gardens, parks and urban spaces. With its imposing growth, appealing bark and attractive foliage, it brings structure, shade and Asian flair to any landscape.

Majestic growth with character


With a growth height of up to 25 metres and an impressive width of approx. 22 metres, the Zelkova develops into a large tree with a broad crown and a striking architectural effect. It grows expansively and forms a distinctive, often umbrella-like crown – perfect as a solitary tree, shade provider or striking design element in spacious grounds.

Distribution

China to Japan.

Growth

The Japanese Zelkova is a spreading and broad-growing large tree. It usually reaches a height of 20–25 metres and a width of approximately 18–22 metres.

Shoots

The shoots of Zelkova serrata are smooth and brown.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Japanese zelkova are dark green, pinnate and serrated. They are approximately 6–12 cm in size. Japanese zelkova turns a bright orange-yellow colour in autumn.

Bark

Grey, scaly bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flowers

The green-brown flowers appear from April to May.

Roots

Zelkova serrata is a heart-rooted plant.

Location

Preferred location in sunny to semi-shaded areas.

Frost hardiness

Japanese Zelkova is very frost hardy.

Care Instructions

Cutting and sawing wounds, as well as broken branches, should be treated as quickly as possible with a wound sealing agent to prevent the entry of pathogens into the plant.

Planting Time

Container plants can be planted year-round, except when the ground is frozen or during summer heat (above 30°C).
