Plants of month August - Southern Nettle Tree (Celtis australis)

A Mediterranean Character Tree with History and Value

The Southern Nettle Tree is not only an elegant eye-catcher, but also a tree rich in history and resilience. Native to the Mediterranean region, it has long been valued for its aesthetic, ecological, and cultural significance – and is increasingly appreciated in Central Europe as a climate-resilient tree for gardens and urban landscapes.

Its wide-spreading canopy offers shade on hot days, while its smooth grey bark and edible dark-red fruits bring southern charm to any outdoor space – especially in August when the fruits begin to ripen and its silhouette provides much-needed relief from the summer sun.

A Tree with History

In ancient Greece and Rome, Celtis australis was considered a sacred tree. It was planted along roads and public spaces, appreciated for its shade and its small, sweet fruits. The leaves and bark were used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory and digestive properties.During the Middle Ages, it was believed to ward off evil spirits and was often planted near homes for protection.Today, Celtis australis still shapes the atmosphere of many southern European towns and villages – lining historical avenues and adorning inner courtyards, especially in France, Italy, and the Balkans.
