Spring on the balcony – Pansies, daffodils, and more

"Spring is here, and that means it's time for some vibrant color on the balcony! And who can bring spring vibes better than daffodils, hyacinths, pansies, and more? Garden centers have plenty to offer.

Whether color-coordinated or a cheerful mix – spring just belongs on the balcony. While there are a few things to keep in mind when arranging the planters, with the right tips, your balcony will quickly become a place for blooming spring feelings."

The more colorful the better

Even though many prefer a unified color scheme, spring is colorful, and it should be! After all, the joy after the gray season is so great that you'd love to have all the colors on your balcony at once. If you can’t decide on a specific color scheme and want as much spring as possible on the balcony, then bring a wide variety of early bloomers into the planter. A colorful mix of daffodils, ranunculus, pansies, forget-me-nots, and low tulips looks great together in the balcony box. A small tip: to prevent the flower bulbs from rotting in the planter, make sure to add a drainage layer of expanded clay before planting.

Uniform color scheme or not

For those who prefer a more uniform look, they can stick to a specific color scheme and choose early bloomers based on colors. Shades of purple, pink, and white work especially well together. The plants in the balcony box look particularly beautiful when they have different heights and growth habits. A great arrangement could include daisies (Bellis), forget-me-nots (Männertreu), and grape hyacinths (Traubenhyazinthen). The upright-growing Bellis and grape hyacinths form a lovely contrast to the hanging forget-me-nots. If you want to break up the uniform color scheme with a small pop of color, you can add a yellow primrose in the center for a little surprise effect.

It doesn't always have to be a bulb

The classic early bloomers are tulips, daffodils, and the like. However, early bloomers don't always have to come from bulbs. There are also perennials that add color splashes early in the year. If you want to plant something a bit unconventional for your balcony, you can try using double primroses, pulmonaria, lungwort, and forget-me-nots. Lungwort and liverwort bloom in the most beautiful shades of blue that nature has to offer, and combined with the double primroses and forget-me-nots, they bring fresh color to your balcony box without the need for bulbs. If you also have a garden, you can easily transplant lungwort and liverwort into the flower bed after they have finished blooming.
