Fully on Trend: The Indoor Pond

The new home trend is the indoor pond. Many have had garden ponds for years, and nature lovers often enjoy the nightly croaking of frogs through an open window. However, the indoor pond is something most people have only seen in a Chinese restaurant. It seems hardly anyone has one at home yet. But, as trends often do, this one is coming from the USA and is now making its way here.

Nature Indoors

If you're building a new winter garden, you can easily embed a water container directly into the floor. Otherwise, wooden containers set on the ground can work, providing aesthetic appeal around the waterproof basin. However, the water must be in a completely watertight container to avoid issues with neighbors. The hard-shell elements typically used for outdoor garden ponds, for instance, are suitable for this purpose.

Not Just Water in the Pond...

...but also plants and animals. The preferred fish for an exclusive indoor pond is the Koi. If space is limited, goldfish and similar species will do just fine. If you have a lot of space, you can let your imagination run wild—with a waterfall or a bridge leading from one room to another, or similar ideas.

A consistently high humidity is beneficial in heated rooms and creates a pleasant climate. With a lounge chair, palms, and other exotic plants, you can create a vacation paradise with surprisingly little effort. You can find all the necessary accessories online, from pond filters and pumps to all sorts of decorations for your indoor pond.

Maintenance

Caring for an indoor pond isn't quite as straightforward as an outdoor one. Even outdoors, the self-cleaning effect often isn't pronounced enough due to the limited water volume. This means that dead plant material will inevitably create a layer of sludge at the bottom. If this layer gets too thick, the pond can "tip over," producing a very unpleasant smell. Before that happens, a pond vacuum is a worthwhile investment. It works much like a regular vacuum cleaner, sucking up the sludge layer so it can be easily disposed of.

Koi and More

If you prefer not to leave valuable fish like Koi outdoors over winter, an indoor pond is an excellent solution. They can also be kept permanently indoors. However, Koi grow very quickly and need roughly 1,000 liters of water per fish, with any expansion of their living space significantly improving their quality of life.

Additionally, these fish prefer bright conditions, so a sunny spot in a winter garden is ideal!
