Gardening tasks before winter

Many bushes and climbing plants, etc., are tied with twine to give them support on trellises and similar structures. Unless they are plants that will be pruned back in winter, you should check them now. Firstly, anything that has grown and is constricting the plants' stems needs to be removed and replaced. Secondly, they need to be tied in such a way that autumn and winter storms cannot cause any damage. Garden wire is relatively stable, but it also becomes brittle over time. So, it's worth checking everything before any parts break off the plants that have taken so much effort to grow.

To ensure everything can be quickly cleaned and used again in the spring, you should now remove the autumn leaves and other dirt. There are special cleaners for stones, and a pressure washer can also help. If the wood of a terrace is not sufficiently protected from the weather due to a lack of paint, you should renew it now. Oil-based substances such as wood stains, which can withstand the permanent moisture in winter, are particularly suitable. Balconies and terraces located on parts of buildings should now be checked for leaks again. Have cracks possibly formed in the tile joints? If so, you need to take action now, otherwise the snow lying on the surface can quickly turn into a downpour in the room below. Water finds its way even through the smallest cracks and can cause significant damage. In an emergency, a thick tarpaulin (available at hardware stores) can help to cover the area as well as possible until spring.

Since hardly anyone will use the garden furniture in winter, it should be brought indoors for the wet season. Although many of the woods used today are weatherproof, hinges and similar parts are only conditionally so. Therefore: wait for a dry day, let everything dry well in the sun, and then store it in the cellar or shed. This also allows you to check for damage that you might be able to repair over the winter. Plastic furniture is also better kept in a dry place. At the very least, it will then last significantly longer.
