Brave New World – Automation in the Garden

In earlier times, gardens and fields were naturally part of every farm, as most vegetables and fruits were grown by the farmers themselves. And many a person back then would have wished for some help with various tasks. Most of the work was done through sheer muscle power – and has since been gradually replaced by technology. But does every task need to be automated?

Mowing the Lawn

It's clear to everyone that mowing the lawn with a scythe requires skill and precision, and doesn't produce the even lawn we're used to today. Similarly, the invention of the lawnmower was a blessing for all hobby gardeners. These have been constantly improved, and today they come in many sizes and designs: electric, gasoline-powered, and some even with batteries for eco-friendly, cord-free mowing.

But is it necessary for a robot to mow the lawn all by itself? Does every task require buying a new device?

Garden Work Should Be Fun

The garden and the work that undoubtedly comes with it should bring joy. No one wants to toil until dark every day just to keep everything in order. Therefore, technical helpers are welcome. However, most owners have small plots attached to their houses, or a mini-garden specifically, which only entails a moderate amount of work. This work should ideally be done by hand and with joy, instead of purchasing a device for every task. A small hedge can also be trimmed by hand, fruit trees with shears, and a spade and rake are ideal exercise tools.

Garden Work Replaces the Gym

If you consistently keep your property in order, you generally don't need a gym membership. Working outdoors is strenuous and often involves physically awkward heights. But that's exactly what should bring us joy—movement in the fresh air. Having a robot do every conceivable task in the garden and then going to the gym afterwards just costs unnecessary money and offers fewer health benefits.

Automation in the Garden

The robotic lawnmower is no longer the sole automated helper in the garden. It's now joined by automatic irrigation systems that know when to water, greenhouses that open and close their windows independently, and much more. However, everyone should decide for themselves what truly makes sense and what is simply bought just because the neighbor already has one.
