The Corsican Hellebore, Helleborus lividus ssp. corsicus (often also classified as Helleborus argutifolius), is a robust, evergreen perennial highly valued for its striking foliage and early, long-lasting blooms. It forms upright, bushy clumps, providing significant winter interest in the garden.

Growth

Upright and bushy, typically growing 0.3 - 1.2 m (1-4 ft) tall and 0.3 - 0.9 m (1-3 ft) wide.

Leaf

Evergreen, large, palmate, leathery, and toothed. They are a distinctive blue-green on the upper side, often with a purplish tint on the underside, giving them a unique appearance throughout the year.

Flower

Clusters of greenish-yellow, cup-shaped flowers appear prominently above the foliage from late winter through spring (February to April), often persisting into early summer.

Location

Prefers partial to dappled shade. While it can tolerate full sun in coastal areas, it generally needs afternoon shade in warmer inland regions. Protect from strong, cold winds.

Frost hardiness

Good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 6-8), but foliage can be damaged by prolonged severe cold spells.

Soil

Prefers humus-rich, fertile, moist, and well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of pH, from neutral to alkaline. Avoid waterlogging.

Use

Excellent for woodland gardens, shady borders, underplanting trees and shrubs, rockeries, and containers. Its evergreen foliage and early flowers make it a valuable plant for winter interest.

Care

Medium water requirement, especially when establishing and during dry spells. Mulch with organic matter in autumn. Remove faded or damaged foliage as new flowers appear. Not a particularly long-lived plant (around 5 years), but it can self-seed in optimal conditions.

Others

All parts of Hellebores are poisonous if ingested.

Water

The plant has a medium to high water requirement. The soil should be kept consistently moist, especially during dry periods and after planting.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen. However, the best planting time is spring or autumn.
