The Cross-leaved Heath 'Hookstone Pink' (Erica tetralix) is a low-growing, broadly bushy dwarf shrub known for its long flowering period and delicate, bell-shaped blooms. From July to October, it produces an abundance of small, light to vibrant pink, bell-shaped flowers, borne in dense clusters at the tips of the shoots. In addition, the Cross-leaved Heath 'Hookstone Pink'® bears small, needle-like, grayish-green leaves, arranged in whorls, which have a soft, silvery sheen. In a sunny to semi-shady location with acidic, humus-rich, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 0.2 - 0.4 m and grows to about 0.3 - 0.5 m wide.

Growth

Cross-leaved Heath 'Hookstone Pink' is a low, broadly bushy to carpet-forming dwarf shrub. It typically reaches a height of 0.2 - 0.4 m and grows to about 0.3 - 0.5 m wide.

Leaf

The evergreen leaves of Cross-leaved Heath 'Hookstone Pink' are needle-like, grayish-green, and arranged in whorls of four leaves. They are small, softly hairy, and give the plant a gentle appearance.

Flower

The numerous small, bell-shaped flowers appear from July to October. They are light to vibrant pink and form dense, terminal clusters.

Root

Erica tetralix 'Hookstone Pink' is a shallow-rooted plant that forms a dense, fibrous root system.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position. Full sun promotes more abundant flowering.

Frost hardiness

The Cross-leaved Heath 'Hookstone Pink' exhibits good frost hardiness. Light winter protection is beneficial in very exposed locations or during severe frost without snow cover.

Soil

Acidic (pH 4.5 - 5.5), humus-rich, nutrient-poor, moist to wet, and well-drained soil is preferred. It is a typical bog garden plant and does not tolerate calcareous soils.

Use

Heath gardens, bog beds, container planting, as ground cover, grave planting, border planting for ponds (not directly in water). It is excellent for mass plantings and for combining with rhododendrons and azaleas.

Water

The plant has a high water requirement. The soil should always be kept moist to wet, but waterlogging around the roots must be avoided.

Care

Light pruning after flowering encourages compact growth and more abundant flowering in the following year. Fertilization with a special rhododendron or ericaceous fertilizer in spring is recommended. Mulching with bark mulch or rhododendron soil helps retain moisture and maintain the acidic pH.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen or during extreme heat. However, the best planting time is spring or autumn.
