The Alpine Basil Thyme (Clinopodium alpinum) is a low-growing, bushy perennial known for its aromatic fragrance and abundant, late bloom. From July to September, it produces a profusion of small, lip-shaped flowers in vibrant purplish-pink, often arranged in whorled inflorescences. In addition, Alpine Basil Thyme bears small, ovate, glossy, dark green leaves that emit an intense scent reminiscent of mint and thyme. In a sunny location with well-drained, calcareous to neutral soil, it typically reaches a height of approximately 0.1 - 0.3 m and grows to about 0.2 - 0.4 m wide.

Growth

Alpine Basil Thyme is a low and compactly bushy growing perennial, often forming mats. It typically reaches a height of 0.1 - 0.3 m and grows to about 0.2 - 0.4 m wide.

Leaf

The deciduous to semi-evergreen leaves of Alpine Basil Thyme are small, ovate, glossy dark green, and finely hairy. When crushed, they release an aromatic scent.

Flower

The numerous small, lip-shaped flowers appear from July to September. They display a color from vibrant purplish-pink to violet and are arranged in attractive inflorescences.

Root

Clinopodium alpinum is a shallow-rooted plant that forms a dense, fibrous root system.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position. It requires full sun to bloom optimally and develop a compact growth habit.

Frost hardiness

Alpine Basil Thyme exhibits very good frost hardiness. It is a typical alpine plant that tolerates cold winters well.

Soil

Well-drained, mineral, lean to moderately nutrient-rich soil is preferred. It thrives well in calcareous and stony soils and tolerates drought excellently.

Use

Rock gardens, alpinum, dry stone walls, green roofs, front of borders, herb gardens. It is an excellent choice for dry, sunny locations and attracts bees and other insects.

Water

The plant has a low water requirement. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and needs little additional watering. Waterlogging should be strictly avoided.

Care

Pruning after flowering can be done to keep the plant compact and encourage possible re-blooming. Fertilization is generally not necessary, as the plant prefers lean soils.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen or during extreme summer heat (above 30°C). However, the best planting time is spring or autumn.
