The Wallis Fescue 'Silbersee' (Festuca valesiaca) is an elegant, evergreen ornamental grass prized for its fine, silvery-blue foliage and its compact, cushion-like growth habit. It forms dense, upright clumps of delicate, wiry leaves that display a vibrant, almost metallic blue shimmer throughout the year. From June to July, delicate, silvery-brown flower panicles also emerge, gracefully hovering above the foliage, though they are rather inconspicuous. In a sunny location with dry, well-drained, and nutrient-poor soil, it typically reaches a height of approximately 0.2 - 0.3 m (foliage height approx. 15-20 cm) and grows to about 0.25 - 0.4 m wide.

Growth

Wallis Fescue 'Silbersee' is a compactly clump-forming and cushion-forming ornamental grass. It typically reaches a height of 0.2 - 0.3 m and grows to about 0.25 - 0.4 m wide.

Leaf

The evergreen leaves of Wallis Fescue 'Silbersee' are very fine, wiry, and boast a striking silvery-blue coloration. This color remains throughout the year, adding significant ornamental value to the plant.

Flower

The delicate, inconspicuous flower panicles appear from June to July. They are initially greenish and then take on a silvery-brown hue. They are less prominent than the foliage.

Root

Festuca valesiaca 'Silbersee' is a shallow-rooted plant that forms a dense, fibrous root system.

Location

Preferred location in full sun. Direct sunlight intensifies the blue coloration of the foliage.

Frost hardiness

Wallis Fescue 'Silbersee' exhibits very good frost hardiness (down to approx. -35°C).

Soil

Dry to moderately dry, well-drained, mineral, nutrient-poor, and neutral to calcareous soil is preferred. Waterlogging must be strictly avoided, as it can lead to root rot.

Use

Rock gardens, gravel gardens, green roofs, trough plantings, as ground cover in full sun areas, front of borders, edging. It is an excellent choice for low-maintenance and drought-tolerant garden designs, especially in Mediterranean or prairie-style gardens.

Water

The plant has a low water requirement. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant and can thrive in prolonged dry periods without additional watering.

Care

Pruning of spent flower stalks is possible to maintain a tidy appearance. The foliage itself should only be combed or cleaned in early spring to remove dead blades and preserve its beautiful color. Fertilization is generally not necessary.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen or during summer heat (above 30°C). However, the best planting time is spring or autumn.
