The Tall Bearded Iris 'Cliffs of Dover' is a magnificent and widely acclaimed cultivar, celebrated for its stunning, pure white, heavily ruffled blooms and impressive stature. Like all bearded irises, it features a distinctive fuzzy "beard" on its lower petals, adding a unique texture and charm. This iris is a spectacular focal point in sunny borders and perennial beds.

Growth

Upright and clump-forming, it typically reaches a height of 0.9 - 1.1 m (3-3.6 ft) and spreads about 0.3 - 0.5 m (1-1.6 ft) wide.

Leaf

Deciduous, sword-shaped, and a beautiful blue-green. They form attractive, fan-like clumps, providing structural interest in the garden even when not in bloom.

Flower

Large, showy, immaculate pure white flowers with exceptionally ruffled edges and a prominent white "beard". The blossoms appear in late spring to early summer (May to June), often with strong rebloom in areas with mild autumns.

Location

Thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) for optimal flowering. Good air circulation around the plants is beneficial to prevent fungal issues.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 3-9). It reliably overwinters outdoors in temperate climates.

Soil

Prefers well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Excellent drainage is critical; avoid heavy, wet soils. When planting, ensure the rhizomes are just at or slightly above the soil surface.

Use

An excellent choice for perennial borders, mixed beds, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and formal plantings. Its pristine white color makes it an ideal companion for nearly any other flower color and a sophisticated cut flower.

Water

Low to medium water requirement. Once established, it's relatively drought-tolerant. Water during prolonged dry spells, especially during the blooming period, but always ensure proper drainage.

Care

Generally low-maintenance. Remove spent flower stalks after blooming to direct energy back into the rhizome and maintain a tidy appearance. Divide overcrowded clumps every 3-5 years in late summer (July-September) in your Ketzin location to maintain vigor and ensure robust flowering. Remove any yellow or diseased leaves promptly.

Planting time

Best planted in late summer to early autumn (July-September) in your region, allowing the roots to establish well before winter. Spring planting is also possible but autumn planting is often preferred for better first-year bloom.

Others

The rhizomes of irises can be toxic if ingested.
