The Chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii) is a bushy perennial that forms creamy white, star-shaped flowers from June to August. Decorative, orange-coloured fruits develop from the flowers in October. Its egg-shaped, wavy leaves are dark green. In a sunny to semi-shady location with humusy, calcareous, sandy soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 1 m and grows to a width of approx. 50 cm. The Chinese lantern is well tolerant of frost.
