'The Rocket' is a dramatic and stately cultivar of Red Hot Poker, known for its tall, torch-like spikes of fiery orange-red flowers that mature to yellow. It brings a bold vertical accent and vibrant color to sunny borders, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.

Growth

Clump-forming perennial. Forms a dense clump of foliage, with flower spikes reaching 90-120 cm (3-4 ft) tall and a spread of 60-90 cm (2-3 ft).

Leaf

Evergreen to semi-evergreen. Long, sword-like, grassy, blue-green foliage.

Flower

Striking, dense, torch-like flower spikes featuring brilliant orange-red buds opening to bright yellow flowers from bottom to top. Blooms from July to September. Highly attractive to pollinators.

Location

Thrives in full sun. Essential for best flowering and plant vigor.

Frost hardiness

Good (USDA Zones 5-9). Benefits from winter protection in colder climates to protect the crown.

Soil

Requires well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerates various soil types but dislikes heavy, wet conditions, especially in winter.

Water

Medium water requirement. Drought-tolerant once established but performs best with regular moisture, especially during dry spells.

Use

Ideal for sunny borders, dramatic accents, cottage gardens, and Mediterranean-style plantings. Excellent as a cut flower.

Care

Low maintenance. Cut back spent flower stalks to promote rebloom and neatness. In autumn, foliage can be tied up to protect the crown from winter moisture.

Planting time

Best planted in spring after the last frost or in early autumn.
