This designation refers to white-flowered forms within the Lenten Rose hybrid group, which are predominantly derived from Helleborus orientalis and other closely related species. These popular perennials offer a vital splash of pure white color in the garden during late winter and early spring.

Growth

Clump-forming perennial. Typically grows 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) tall and 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) wide.

Leaf

Evergreen. Large, deeply lobed, leathery, dark green foliage that provides year-round structure.

Flower

Showy, often nodding, pure white to creamy white, cup-shaped flowers. Some forms may have subtle green veins or maroon/red speckles. Blooms profusely from February to April. Attracts early pollinators.

Location

Thrives in partial to full shade. Best protected from harsh winter winds and intense afternoon sun.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 4-9). Very cold-hardy and resilient.

Soil

Prefers organically rich, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Tolerates neutral to alkaline pH. Good drainage is crucial; avoids waterlogging.

Water

Medium water needs. Keep consistently moist, especially during dry spells; less water needed during summer dormancy.

Use

Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, underplanting deciduous trees/shrubs, and containers. Provides essential winter and early spring interest.

Care

Low maintenance. Cut back old, tattered foliage in late winter before new growth and flowers emerge to improve appearance and prevent leaf spot diseases. Established plants can self-seed.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
