The Swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a large tree that grows in a conical shape and usually reaches a height of around 40 metres and a width of around 10 metres. Its needle-shaped leaves are light green in colour. They turn a beautiful red-brown in autumn. Decorative brown cones adorn Taxodium distichum from October. This shrub tolerates frost well. It prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich, moist to wet soil in a sunny, sheltered position.

The Swamp cypress is deciduous. Its needles are light green, alternate. Swamp cypress turns bright red-brown in autumn.

Bark

Red-brown, striped, torn bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Fruit

The brown, round cones of Taxodium distichum are particularly decorative. These appear from October and the young cones are green in colour.

Root

Taxodium distichum is a taproot and, depending on the soil, forms spreading, branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny, sheltered position.

The Swamp cypress has good frost hardiness.
