'Williams Christbirne', often simply called Williams Pear or Bartlett pear in North America, is one of the most famous and widely cultivated pear varieties globally. It's beloved for its classic pear flavor, melting texture, and versatility. The "CAC" designation indicates certified, high-quality plant material.

Growth

A medium-growing, deciduous fruit tree that forms an upright, pyramidal crown. Typically reaches 3-5 m (10-16 ft) high and 2-4 m (7-13 ft) wide, depending on rootstock and pruning.

Leaf

Standard green, oval, deciduous pear foliage, turning yellow-orange in autumn.

Flower

Abundant white blossoms in April to May. It is partially self-fertile but benefits greatly from a pollinator for optimal fruit set (e.g., 'Conference', 'Gute Luise', 'Clapps Liebling', 'Köstliche von Charneux').

Fruit

Medium to large, classic pyriform (pear-shaped) fruit. The skin is thin, smooth, and bright green, turning golden yellow when ripe, often with a slight red blush. The flesh is white, exceptionally juicy, very sweet, highly aromatic, and melting, with a distinctive musky flavor.

Ripening Time: Harvest in mid-August to early September. The pears are typically ready to eat very shortly after harvest and do not store long (a few weeks in cool conditions). It's crucial to pick them before they are fully soft on the tree.

Location

Prefers full sun for the best fruit quality and most abundant yields.

Soil

Thrives in deep, fertile, moist, well-drained loamy soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.

Water

Medium water requirement. Consistent moisture is crucial, especially during fruit development and dry spells.

Frost hardiness

Good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 5-8). It performs well in temperate climates.

Use

Primarily an outstanding dessert pear for fresh consumption. Also widely used for canning, preserves, juice, and famously for 'Poire Williams' brandy. Ideal for home gardens and commercial orchards.

Care

Moderate maintenance. Regular winter pruning is essential to maintain tree shape, encourage new fruiting wood, and ensure good fruit quality. Can be susceptible to pear scab and fire blight in some regions/conditions.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn (October to November) or early spring (March to April) when dormant.
