'Frühlingsbote' (meaning 'Spring Messenger') is a vibrant globeflower cultivar known for its cheerful, bright yellow to orange-yellow, spherical flowers that light up the garden early in the season. It's a robust perennial that thrives in moist conditions, adding a burst of color to borders and damp areas.

Growth

An upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial. It typically grows to 40-60 cm (16-24 inches) in height and 20-35 cm (8-14 inches) in spread, forming a neat mound of foliage.

Leaf

Deciduous, deeply lobed, and deeply cut, featuring a rich green color. The foliage forms a dense basal clump from which the flower stems emerge.

Flower

Produces large, globular (ball-shaped) flowers that open to a cup-shape as they mature. The color is typically a bright yellow to orange-yellow. It blooms early, from April to May, making it one of the first Trollius to flower.

Location

Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers cooler climates and consistent moisture, disliking hot, dry conditions.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 3-8), making it very cold-hardy.

Soil

Prefers moist to consistently wet, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It adapts well to clay and loam, but dislikes drying out. Ideal for boggy or damp areas.

Water

Has a high water requirement. Requires consistently moist conditions, especially during the growing and blooming season.

Use

Ideal for moist perennial borders, bog gardens, pond edges, or naturalistic plantings where its bright blooms can be showcased. It also makes an excellent cut flower.

Care

Low maintenance. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage tidiness and potentially a small rebloom. If foliage declines in summer, it can be cut back for a neater appearance. Divide clumps in late summer or early fall if needed.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
