'Gute Luise von Avranches' is a classic, old French pear cultivar, highly valued for its exquisite flavor, juicy texture, and good storage capabilities. It's a very popular choice for fresh eating and home gardens. The "CAC" designation indicates certified, high-quality plant material.

Growth

A moderately vigorous, deciduous fruit tree. It forms a somewhat upright, broad, and rather open crown. Typically grows 3-5 meters (10-16 ft) high and 2-4 meters (7-13 ft) wide, depending on rootstock and pruning.

Leaf

Standard green, oval, deciduous pear foliage, turning yellow in autumn.

Flower

Produces abundant white blossoms in April to May. While partially self-fertile, it significantly benefits from a pollinator for optimal yields (e.g., 'Conference', 'Williams Christ', 'Clapps Liebling', 'Köstliche von Charneux').

Fruit

Medium to large, broadly pear-shaped, slightly irregular. The skin is smooth, yellowish-green, often developing a beautiful pinkish-red blush on the sunny side, with fine russeting. The flesh is white, very fine, extremely juicy, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth, with an intense, sweet-aromatic flavor.

Ripening Time: Harvest in late September to early October. The pears are typically ready to eat shortly after harvest and can be stored in cool conditions until November/December.

Location

Prefers full sun for the best fruit quality and most abundant yields.

Soil

Thrives in deep, fertile, moist, well-drained loamy soils. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH and doesn't tolerate heavy, waterlogged conditions.

Water

Medium water requirement. Consistent moisture is crucial, especially during fruit development and dry spells.

Frost hardiness

Good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 5-8). It tolerates temperate climates well.

Use

Primarily an outstanding dessert pear for fresh consumption due to its exceptional flavor and texture. Also suitable for compotes and desserts. Ideal for home gardens and small orchards.

Care

Moderate maintenance. Regular pruning in winter is essential to maintain tree shape, encourage new fruiting wood, and ensure good fruit quality. It has good general disease resistance but can be susceptible to pear scab in very humid conditions.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn (October to November) or early spring (March to April) when dormant.
