'Conference' is one of the most popular and widely grown pear cultivars, cherished for its excellent flavor, consistent yields, and good storage capabilities. The "CAC" designation indicates certified, high-quality plant material.

Growth

Deciduous fruit tree. Forms a pyramidal to broad, open crown. Typically grows 4-6 m (13-20 ft) high and 3-5 m (10-16 ft) wide, depending on rootstock and pruning.

Leaf

Green, oval, turning yellow in autumn.

Flower

White flowers in April-May. Self-fertile, but benefits from a pollinator for higher yields (e.g., 'Williams Christ', 'Gute Luise').

Fruit

Medium-sized, elongated, bottle-shaped pears. Greenish-yellow skin with distinctive russeting. Flesh is fine, juicy, very sweet, and aromatic, becoming melting when fully ripe.

Ripening: Harvest in mid-September to October. Ready to eat from October, stores well until December/January.

Location

Prefers full sun for optimal fruit development.

Soil

Adaptable, but thrives in deep, fertile, moist, well-drained loamy soils.

Water

Medium water needs. Ensure consistent moisture, especially during fruit growth and dry periods.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 4-9).

Use

Excellent dessert pear for fresh eating, also good for cooking and preserving. Ideal for home gardens and commercial orchards.

Care

Moderate maintenance. Prune in winter for shape and fruit production. Good disease resistance, especially to scab, but moderately susceptible to fire blight.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring when dormant.
