This elegant ornamental grass is highly prized for its exceptionally long, silky, silvery-white feathery plumes that sway gracefully in the breeze. It forms neat clumps of fine foliage, adding movement and texture to sunny, dry garden areas.

Growth

An upright, clump-forming deciduous perennial grass. It typically reaches 80-100 cm (31-39 inches) in height (including flower plumes) and 30-50 cm (12-20 inches) in spread.

Leaf

Fine, narrow, and grass-like, usually a fresh green color, forming a dense basal tuft.

Flower

Produces striking, long, silvery-white to golden-silvery feathery awns (plumes) on slender, arching stems. These plumes are the main ornamental feature. It blooms from June to August.

Location

Thrives in full sun for best growth and plume development.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 6-9), moderately cold-hardy, benefits from winter protection in colder zones.

Soil

Requires very well-drained, sandy, or stony soil. It prefers poor to average fertility and dislikes heavy, wet soils, especially in winter.

Water

Low water requirement. Highly drought-tolerant once established.

Use

Ideal for gravel gardens, rockeries, dry borders, steppe plantings, or as a specimen grass for accent. Excellent for adding vertical texture and movement.

Care

Low maintenance. Cut back old foliage and flower stems in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Protect from excessive winter moisture.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
