The Mexican Hyssop (Agastache mexicana) is a vibrant and aromatic perennial herb native to Mexico, highly valued for its striking flower spikes, fragrant foliage, and its ability to attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies. It's an excellent choice for herb gardens, mixed borders, and dry, sunny locations.

Growth

An upright, bushy perennial that forms compact clumps. It typically reaches a height of 0.6 - 1 m (2-3.3 ft) and spreads about 0.3 - 0.6 m (1-2 ft) wide. It has a moderate growth rate and can be short-lived but often self-seeds in favorable conditions.

Leaf

Deciduous, lanceolate to oval-lanceolate, medium green, and highly aromatic. When crushed, the leaves emit a distinct lemon-anise or minty fragrance, making them suitable for teas or culinary use.

Flower

Produces dense, upright spikes of small, tubular flowers in shades of pink, rose-red, or purplish-pink. Blooms profusely from mid-summer to early autumn (July to September), providing a long season of color.

Location

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun is preferred for the best flowering and strongest fragrance.

Frost hardiness

Moderate frost hardiness (USDA Zones 7-10). In colder climates (below Zone 7), it is often grown as an annual or may need winter protection (e.g., heavy mulching) to survive. It can reliably overwinter in milder regions.

Soil

Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile to lean soils. It is quite adaptable but good drainage is crucial, as it dislikes wet, heavy soils, especially in winter, which can lead to crown or root rot. Tolerates some drought once established.

Use

Ideal for herb gardens, pollinator gardens, perennial borders, gravel gardens, and xeriscaping. Its aromatic foliage and attractive flowers make it a valuable addition to sensory gardens. The leaves can be used for herbal teas and flavoring dishes.

Water

Low water requirement. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Provide moderate watering during prolonged dry spells.

Care

Low maintenance. Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding. Cut back the entire plant in late autumn or early spring before new growth emerges. Generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Planting time

Containerized plants can be planted from spring to early autumn. Bare-root plants should be planted in spring.
