The Chinese box thorn (Lycium barbarum) produces red berries. These are sweet and sour with an aromatic flavour. Well-drained, calcareous, nutrient-rich soil and a sunny to semi-shady location create the ideal conditions for a high-yielding harvest from August. Its purple-red flowers are a beautiful sight.

Growth

Chinese box thorn is a broad, overhanging shrub that can reach a height of 2 - 3 metres and a width of 2 - 3 metres. It usually grows 50 - 90 cm per year.

The shoots of Lycium barbarum are spiny.

The purple-red, bell-shaped flowers appear from June to October.
