'Hinnonmäki gelb' is a highly regarded Finnish gooseberry cultivar, known for its excellent resistance to powdery mildew and its delicious, sweet-aromatic yellow fruits. The "CAC II" designation indicates a certified, high-quality plant material.

Growth

This is a deciduous, spiny shrub that typically grows to 0.8 - 1.2 meters (2.6-4 ft) in both height and spread, forming an upright to slightly arching, bushy habit.

Fruit

Produces a good yield of medium-sized, yellow berries that are firm, only slightly hairy, and resistant to cracking. They have a pleasant sweet-aromatic flavor. Fruits ripen from mid-July onwards.

Flower

Small, greenish-white flowers appear in April-May, attracting bees.

Location

Best in full sun to partial shade.

Soil

Prefers moist, well-drained, nutrient-rich, humus-rich garden soil.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zone 4, down to -28°C/-30°C).

Use

Excellent for fresh eating, jams, jellies, baking, and suitable for home gardens, including container cultivation.

Care

Low maintenance due to high disease resistance. Prune in late winter to encourage fruit production. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during fruiting.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during fruit development and dry periods. Avoid waterlogging.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn (September to November) or early spring (March to April) when dormant. Containerized plants can be planted throughout the growing season outside of frost.
