'Hinnonmäki rot' is a popular Finnish gooseberry cultivar, highly valued for its excellent resistance to powdery mildew and its abundant harvest of sweet, aromatic red fruits. The "CAC II" designation indicates certified, high-quality plant material.

Growth

This is a deciduous, spiny shrub that typically grows to 0.8 - 1.5 meters (2.6-5 ft) in both height and spread. It forms an upright to slightly arching, bushy habit.

Fruit

Produces a good yield of medium-sized, round, red berries. They have a thin, slightly hairy skin, are firm, and generally crack-resistant. The taste is sweet and aromatic, often with a pleasant tartness, making them excellent for fresh consumption.

Ripening Time: Fruits ripen from mid-July to August.

Flower

Small, greenish-white flowers appear in April-May, attracting bees.

Location

Best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun usually leads to sweeter fruits and better yields.

Soil

Prefers moist, well-drained, nutrient-rich, humus-rich garden soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during fruit development and dry periods.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zone 4, down to -28°C/-30°C).

Use

Excellent for fresh eating, jams, jellies, juices, and baking. Suitable for home gardens, fruit gardens, and even container cultivation. It's a reliable self-pollinator.

Care

Relatively low maintenance due to its high resistance to powdery mildew. Prune in late winter to remove old wood, encourage new growth, and maximize fruit production. Fertilize in spring.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn (September to November) or early spring (March to April) when dormant. Containerized plants can be planted throughout the growing season outside of frost.
