Salix repens nitida is a charming, low-growing willow variety noted for its dense, silvery-green foliage with a distinct sheen. It forms a compact mat, making it an excellent groundcover or rock garden plant, providing fine texture and subtle spring interest with its catkins.

Country of origin

Europe

Growth

A low-growing, spreading deciduous shrub, often forming a dense mat. It typically reaches 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) in height and 60-120 cm (2-4 feet) in spread.

Shoots

The shoots of Salix repens subsp. dunensis are downy and grey.

Leaf

Kleine, ovale bis elliptische, silbrig-grüne bis dunkelgrüne Blätter mit einer deutlich glänzenden Oberseite. Die Unterseite ist oft grauweiss.

Flower

Produces small, fuzzy, yellowish-green catkins (male or female) appearing before the leaves. Blooms in early spring (March-April).

Roots

Salix repens subsp. dunensis is a shallow-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms extensively branched roots.

Location

Thrives in full sun for best foliage color and compact growth. Tolerates light partial shade.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 4-8), very cold-hardy.

Soil

Prefers moist, well-drained, average to poor soil. Adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy or loamy, and tolerates coastal conditions.

Use

Ideal for groundcover, rock gardens, slopes, coastal gardens, or the front of borders. Its compact size makes it suitable for small spaces.

Water

Has a medium water requirement. Benefits from consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, but is moderately drought-tolerant once established.

Care

Low maintenance. Can be pruned in late winter or early spring to control spread or maintain a denser habit.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
