Sargent's Crabapple (Malus sargentii) is a beloved deciduous shrub or small tree, highly valued for its dense, broad growth habit, profuse spring bloom, and attractive, persistent red fruits. It's an excellent choice for smaller gardens, as a specimen plant, or for informal hedges.

Growth

This plant typically grows as a dense, spreading, horizontally branched, multi-stemmed shrub or a dwarf tree. It is usually wider than it is tall, reaching a height of 1.8 - 3 m (6-10 ft) and spreading 2.7 - 4.5 m (9-15 ft) wide. It has a moderate growth rate, but is often described as slow-growing compared to other crabapples, particularly when young.

Leaf

Deciduous, the leaves are dark green, ovate to elliptic, often subtly lobed, and have serrated margins. They turn shades of yellow or orange in the autumn before falling.

Flower

In mid-spring (April-May), the plant is covered in an abundance of small, fragrant white flowers that emerge from pink or red buds. The profuse bloom often occurs in alternate years, with heavy flowering every other year.

Fruit

Following the flowers, numerous small, pea-sized (approx. 0.5-1 cm / 0.2-0.4 inches) bright red crabapples develop. These fruits are very showy and persist on the branches well into winter, providing an important food source for birds and adding winter interest. They are generally considered too tart for human consumption but can be used for jelly.

Location

Thrives in full sun for optimal flowering and fruiting. While adaptable, it's best to ensure good air circulation.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 4-7). It reliably overwinters outdoors.

Soil

Prefers medium moisture, well-drained, acidic to neutral loams. It adapts to a wide range of soil types, including clay, and has some drought tolerance once established. Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained conditions.

Use

Ideal as a specimen plant in small gardens, foundation plantings, mass plantings, or as an informal hedge. Its compact size makes it suitable for urban environments and it attracts birds.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep consistently moist during establishment. Once established, it tolerates some drought but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells.

Care

Low maintenance. Pruning is generally not heavily required but can be done in late winter (when dormant) to maintain shape or remove dead/crossing branches. Avoid spring pruning to prevent fresh cuts where fire blight bacteria can enter. It's known for good disease resistance, particularly to apple scab, though minor susceptibility to leaf spot and fire blight can occur.

Planting time

Containerized plants can be planted year-round, except when the ground is frozen. Bare-root plants are best planted in early spring before new growth begins.
