Pulmonaria dacica 'Blaues Meer' is a charming herbaceous perennial highly valued for its striking, vivid blue flowers that bring early spring color to shady garden areas. Its common name, "Blue Sea," aptly describes its dense clusters of rich blue blooms.

Growth

This is a clump-forming to mat-forming herbaceous perennial that typically reaches a height of 20 - 30 cm (8 - 12 inches) and a spread of 20 - 30 cm (8 - 12 inches). It can slowly spread via short runners.

Leaf

The leaves are deciduous to semi-evergreen, lance-shaped, dark green, and often slightly hairy or rough-textured. Unlike some other Pulmonaria, the leaves of 'Blaues Meer' generally lack distinct silver spotting, maintaining a more uniform green appearance.

Flower

Produces abundant clusters of intensely dark blue, funnel-shaped flowers. The buds often start as a purplish-pink and open to a brilliant, almost gentian-blue, creating a striking "blue sea" effect. It blooms generously from March to May, providing an early and vital nectar source for bees and other pollinators.

Location

Thrives in partial shade to full shade. It prefers cool, shaded conditions, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens or under trees and shrubs.

Frost hardiness

Excellent frost hardiness (typically USDA Zones 3-8, hardy down to -34°C / -30°F). It reliably overwinters outdoors.

Soil

Prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. It tolerates a range of soil types but thrives in slightly acidic to neutral pH. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, especially in winter.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods in spring and summer. It appreciates a consistently damp environment but does not tolerate standing water.

Use

Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, groundcover, underplanting shrubs, and rock gardens. Its early bloom and dense habit make it perfect for naturalizing in shady areas. It's a valuable early bloomer for pollinators.

Care

Relatively low maintenance. Remove old or damaged leaves after flowering to encourage fresh foliage growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Division every 3-5 years in autumn or after flowering can help maintain vigor. It's generally pest-resistant but can be susceptible to powdery mildew in very dry, stagnant conditions.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn (September to November) or early spring (March to April). Containerized plants can be planted throughout the growing season, avoiding extreme heat or frost.
