'Topas' is a captivating hybrid Sempervivum known for its stunning, variable leaf coloration, which ranges from bronze-green to vibrant purple-red, especially intense in cooler temperatures. It forms neat, dense rosettes, adding year-round textural and color interest to dry garden spots.

Growth

Low-growing, mat-forming evergreen succulent perennial. Forms rosettes typically 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) in diameter, slowly spreading via offsets to 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) wide.

Leaf

Fleshy, oblong to lance-shaped leaves, showing striking seasonal color changes. Colors range from bronze-green to grey-green with purple tips, intensifying to rich red or purple in cold weather or full sun.

Flower

Produces upright stems up to 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) tall bearing clusters of small, star-shaped, pink to reddish-pink flowers. Blooms in summer (June-July). The flowering rosette typically dies after blooming, but surrounding offsets ensure continuity.

Location

Thrives in full sun for the best and most vibrant leaf coloration. Good air circulation is beneficial.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 3-8), highly cold-hardy, tolerating very low temperatures.

Soil

Requires very well-drained, gritty, poor to average soil. Excellent drainage is paramount to prevent rot, especially in winter.

Water

Low water requirement. Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Avoid overwatering.

Use

Ideal for rock gardens, containers, troughs, green roofs, dry stone walls, or between paving stones. Its compact size and vibrant color make it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and small-scale plantings.

Care

Very low maintenance. Protect from excessive winter wet. Remove spent rosettes (which will die back after flowering) to maintain tidiness and encourage new offset growth.

Planting time

Best planted in spring or autumn.
