This refers to the common violet-flowering varieties of Lilyturf, a versatile and easy-to-grow evergreen perennial. It forms dense clumps of attractive foliage, providing year-round interest and a vibrant display of purple flowers in late summer.

Growth

Clump-forming, grass-like evergreen perennial. Typically grows 0.3 - 0.45 m (1-1.5 ft) tall and spreads about 0.3 - 0.45 m (1-1.5 ft) wide by slowly expanding rhizomes, though it's not aggressively spreading like Liriope spicata.

Leaf

Evergreen, narrow, strap-like, glossy, and dark green. They form dense mounds, providing consistent groundcover. In colder winters, foliage might brown at the tips but remains largely intact.

Flower

Erect, dense spikes of small, violet-purple, bell-shaped flowers that resemble grape hyacinths. Blooms appear prominently above the foliage from late summer to early autumn (August to September). These are often followed by shiny, black berries that persist through winter.

Location

Highly adaptable, it thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it tolerates full shade, growth may be slower and foliage more elongated. Shelter from cold, drying winds in frost-prone areas is beneficial.

Frost hardiness

Good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 5-10). Generally reliable in Ketzin, though foliage might decline in severe winters.

Soil

Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil. It's tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sand, and various pH levels (acidic to neutral). Good drainage is important; it dislikes constantly soggy or wet soil which can lead to root rot.

Use

Excellent as a groundcover, for edging borders and pathways, in mass plantings, under trees and shrubs, on slopes for erosion control, and in containers. It's deer and rabbit tolerant and can handle some drought once established.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep consistently moist during the first growing season to establish. Once established, it's fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells.

Care

Low maintenance. Cut back or mow old foliage to the ground in late winter to early spring before new growth appears to refresh the plant. No serious insect or disease problems, but monitor for slugs and snails. Fertilization is generally not necessary in good soil.

Planting time

Containerized plants can be planted year-round, except when the ground is frozen. However, the best planting time is spring or autumn to allow for good root establishment before extreme temperatures.
