The Hoary Evening Primrose (Oenothera macrocarpa ssp. incana) is a captivating perennial that offers a long season of interest with its unique foliage and striking blooms. It's an excellent choice for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and sunny, dry borders where its drought tolerance and low-maintenance nature can be fully appreciated.

Growth

This is a low-growing, spreading herbaceous perennial, forming a mat or dense rosette of foliage. It typically reaches a height of 15 - 30 cm (6-12 inches), with its flower stems extending slightly higher, and spreads 30 - 60 cm (1-2 ft) wide. It's a relatively vigorous grower, forming a good groundcover.

Leaf

Deciduous, the leaves are lance-shaped to elliptic, often with an undulating margin, and are covered with fine silver hairs, giving them a distinct silvery-gray to blue-green color. This silvery foliage provides excellent contrast with the flowers.

Flower

Produces large, showy, cup-shaped, bright lemon-yellow flowers that are typically 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) wide. These vibrant blooms open in the evening and usually remain open through the following afternoon. They appear profusely from late spring to early autumn (May to September), often in waves, providing a long-lasting display.

Location

Thrives in full sun. It needs ample sunlight to flower profusely and maintain its compact, silvery foliage. Good air circulation is also beneficial.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 4-8). It reliably overwinters outdoors in most temperate climates.

Soil

Prefers poor to moderately fertile, very well-drained soil. It is highly tolerant of sandy, gravelly, or lean soils and is particularly well-suited for rocky sites. Excellent drainage is crucial, as it dislikes heavy, wet soils, especially in winter, which can lead to root rot.

Use

Very low maintenance. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage rebloom and prevent excessive self-seeding (though some self-seeding might be desirable for naturalizing). In late fall or early spring, it can be trimmed back to tidy the plant. It's generally resistant to deer. Watch for slugs and snails.

Water

Low water requirement. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering.

Planting time

Containerized plants can be planted year-round, except when the ground is frozen. Planting in spring or early autumn allows for good establishment.
