'Sommerkleid' is a magnificent perennial that enriches the garden in mid-summer with its colorful and fragrant blooms. It's a classic choice for cottage gardens, perennial beds, and mixed borders.

Growth

This cultivar forms upright, bushy clumps and is an herbaceous perennial. It typically reaches a height of 80 - 100 cm (31-39 inches) and spreads about 40 - 50 cm (16-20 inches) wide. It's vigorous and sturdy, making it a reliable garden plant.

Leaf

Deciduous, the leaves are oblong-lanceolate, medium green, and arranged oppositely on the stems. They form dense foliage.

Flower

The flowers of 'Sommerkleid' appear in large, dense panicles (clusters). They are white-pink in color, often with a striking dark pink to carmine-red center (eye). The contrast between the lighter flower color and the darker eye is very appealing. The flowers emit a pleasant, sweet fragrance. The blooming period is very long, from July to September, attracting bees, butterflies, and moths.

Location

Prefers full sun to light partial shade. A sunny but well-ventilated location is crucial to minimize susceptibility to powdery mildew. It should not be planted too densely to ensure good air circulation.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (down to below -25°C / -13°F, USDA Zones 4-8). It reliably overwinters outdoors.

Soil

Thrives best in fresh to moist, nutrient-rich, and well-drained garden soils. It prefers humus-rich soils and is susceptible to drought. Waterlogging should be absolutely avoided.

Use

Ideal for perennial beds, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, and for designing borders. Due to its upright growth habit and long flowering period, it's an excellent structural plant in the summer bed and combines well with other summer-flowering plants.

Water

Medium to high water requirement. The soil should be kept consistently moist, especially during dry spells and the blooming period. A layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture.

Care

Relatively low maintenance. Deadhead spent flower clusters regularly to encourage continuous blooming and prevent seed formation (which can weaken the plant). This significantly extends the flowering period. In late autumn or early spring, the plant can be cut back to the ground. To prevent powdery mildew, good ventilation is important, and watering should be directed at the base of the plant rather than overhead. Dividing clumps every few years in spring or autumn can help maintain the plant's vigor.

Planting time

Containerized plants can be planted year-round, as long as the ground is not frozen. However, the best planting times are spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) to ensure good establishment.
