The Common privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is a bushy, loose shrub with decorative, black, round fruits. These exude a pleasant fragrance. It produces creamy white flowers arranged in panicles from June to July. The Common privet also has leathery, lanceolate, dark green leaves. In a sunny to shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 5 metres and grows to a width of around 5 metres.

Growth

Common privet is a bushy and loose-growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 5 m and is approx. 2 - 5 m wide. It usually grows 20 - 25 cm per year.

Flower

The creamy white flowers of the Common privet appear in panicles from June to July. These are pleasantly scented.

Fruit

The black, round fruits of Ligustrum vulgare are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Ligustrum vulgare is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Preferred location in a sunny to shady position.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- Watering less frequently, but thoroughly and thoroughly, encourages the plant roots to penetrate deeper into the soil. This enables the plant to survive dry periods better.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
