The Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) produces orange-red berries. These are juicy and tart, with an aromatic flavour. Well-drained, calcareous, sandy soil and a sunny location create the ideal conditions for a high-yield harvest from August.

The shoots of Hippophae rhamnoides are spiny.

The deciduous leaves of the Sea buckthorns are grey-green, lanceolate, alternate. They are about 2 - 5 cm in size. Long adherent.

Fruit

The orange-red berries have a tart, aromatic flavour. The flesh of these oval berries is juicy. Ripening time from August.

Root

Hippophae rhamnoides is a shallow-rooted or deep-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

Frost hardiness

The Sea buckthorn has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Hippophae rhamnoides prefers nutrient-rich, sufficiently moist soil.

Use

Ornamental shrub, bird food plant, jam, liqueur, dessert

Water

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

Cut back frozen shoots to the healthy wood as soon as there is no longer any danger of frost.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
