The Black mulberry (Morus nigra) produces black-red fruits. They are berry-like and have an aromatic flavour. Well-drained, calcareous, sandy, acidic soil and a sunny location create ideal conditions for a high-yielding harvest from August. Its inconspicuous flowers are a beautiful sight. The Black mulberry grows to around 15 metres high and 15 metres wide with its rounded habit.

The deciduous leaves of the Black mulberry are dark green, heart-shaped, alternate, coarsely serrated. They are about 6 - 12 cm in size. Black mulberry is bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Olive-green bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

Morus nigra forms inconspicuous flowers arranged in spikes from May.

Fruit

The black-red fruits have an aromatic flavour. The drupes are berry-like. Ripening time from August.

Morus nigra is a heartroot.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny, sheltered position.

The Black mulberry has good frost hardiness.
