The Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana) is one of the most popular and widely grown deciduous magnolias, prized for its spectacular display of large, goblet to saucer-shaped flowers in early spring, often before its leaves emerge. This hybrid magnolia is a result of a cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, first bred in France around 1826. It's a classic choice for adding an elegant, dramatic touch to the landscape. The Saucer Magnolia is a magnificent deciduous shrub or small tree, renowned for its abundant and showy early spring blossoms.

Growth

This plant typically grows as a multi-stemmed large shrub or a small tree. Young plants tend to be upright, gradually developing a more rounded and spreading shape with age. It usually reaches a height of 4.5 - 7.5 m (15-25 ft) and can spread similarly wide. Its growth rate is moderate, slowing down significantly after about 20 years.

Leaf

Deciduous, broad oval-shaped leaves are glossy and dark green during the summer. In autumn, they turn a pleasant yellow before falling.

Flower

The most striking feature of the Saucer Magnolia is its large, goblet-shaped flowers, often 10-20 cm (4-8 in) across. They typically bloom dramatically on bare branches in early spring (late March to mid-April in temperate climates), before the leaves emerge. Flower colors vary widely among cultivars, ranging from pure white to various shades of pink, purple, and even maroon, often with a bicolor effect (darker on the outside, lighter inside). Some varieties are also fragrant.

Location

Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes the best flowering. It's best to choose a site sheltered from strong, cold winds, as these can damage the large, delicate flowers and brittle branches. Late frosts can also unfortunately damage early blooms.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 5-9). While cold-tolerant, its early bloom time makes it susceptible to late spring frosts that can damage the flowers.

Soil

Thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, and slightly acidic to neutral soil. While adaptable to clay, loam, and sand, it does not tolerate consistently wet or poorly drained conditions, which can lead to root rot. Avoid shallow chalky soils.

Use

An excellent choice as a specimen plant due to its show-stopping floral display. It's also suitable for mixed borders, cottage gardens, city gardens, and can even be grown in large containers when young.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep consistently moist during the first couple of years while establishing. Once established, it has moderate drought tolerance but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in summer.

Care

Generally low maintenance. Little pruning is required; if necessary, prune lightly in mid-summer after flowering to remove any awkwardly growing or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted from late autumn through early spring when the plant is dormant.
