The Filbert 'Purpurea' (Corylus maxima) is an upright, umbrella-shaped, deciduous large shrub with decorative, roundish, black-red leaves. The red shoots are also an interesting sight. It also bears red flowers arranged in catkins from March to April. These produce red-brown, round fruits from August. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, nutrient-rich, sandy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 4 metres and grows to a width of around 3.5 metres.
