The Resista elm ‘Cathedral’: A tree with poise (and heart)

Anyone who thinks elms are only for old avenues and dusty parks has not yet encountered the Resista elm ‘Cathedral’®. This medium-sized tree not only brings order to urban spaces, but also adds a touch of style to any garden or park.

Growth with character

The Resista elm ‘Cathedral’® initially grows upright and vase-shaped – a little as if it wanted to politely make room for everything around it. But over the years, it develops a broad, impressive crown that spreads over its surroundings like a green roof. Ideal for anyone who wants to provide shade without having to plant a giant sequoia. With a height of 15–20 meters and a width of up to 15 meters, it has a presence without being ostentatious.

Simple flowers, golden show

Admittedly, the flowers of ‘Cathedral’® are not divas. From March to April, it produces inconspicuous but thoroughly appealing flowers, which later develop into flat, brown winged fruits – botanically correct, visually discreet.But in autumn, it really comes into its own: its egg-shaped, double-serrated leaves glow in a rich golden yellow. Bring on autumn – in style!

Down-to-earth and undemanding – at least almost

This elm is not fussy. It prefers sunny to semi-shaded locations, likes well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and copes well with damp to wet conditions. A true survivor – thanks in part to its strong heart root system, which reaches deep and far. Translation: windthrow? Hardly an issue.It doesn't particularly like dry periods, so please water it when summer switches back to “desert climate” mode.Easy to care for, but with certain requirementsThe good news: it doesn't need much care. A slow-release fertilizer in spring helps it get off to a strong start. And if you start pruning early, you will be rewarded with a stable and aesthetic crown – just like with a good haircut: better to do it regularly than radically.

Frost? So what?

'The ‘Cathedral’® is frost-hardy – really hardy. Winter has little effect on it; it remains steadfast where others buckle.
