Plant of the Month for July - Hosta 'Sum and Substance'

The large-leaved hosta 'Sum and Substance' is an impressive plant that deserves our full attention in July. It blooms very profusely and forms a beautiful carpet of fresh green leaves - especially when several plants are planted together. The reason for this is their bushy, upright and clumpy growth, with the shoots close together. The plant grows between 60 and 80 centimeters high and between 60 and 70 centimeters wide.

Large leaves and a beautiful, lush flower

The leaves of the hosta 'Sum and Substance', up to 40 centimeters long, are deciduous, shiny, heart-shaped, pointed and entire. The visible leaf veins shine in a fresh yellow-green. This summer plant blooms profusely in a bright light purple from August to September. The hosta 'Sum and Substance' simply flowers in clusters on upright stems. The funnel-shaped flowers are very popular in bouquets and as cut flowers.

Partly shaded to shady location

Since the hosta 'Sum and Substance' is a shallow-rooted plant, it needs fresh, well-drained, humus-rich and nutrient-rich soil. The plant loves semi-shady to shady locations, which makes it a popular garden plant as many other plants require much more sun. It is best to plant the hosta at a distance of one to two plants per square meter. It is suitable for beds, tree edges and rockeries, but is also a real beauty as a container plant.

Robust and easy to care for

When it comes to care, the hosta 'Sum and Substance' is a stroke of luck: it is robust and undemanding. As with all plants, dead leaves and flowers should be removed regularly. Another advantage of this plant is its high resistance to pests and diseases. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, as the plant prefers moist soil. In spring it is advisable to provide the plant with compost or organic fertilizer to promote its growth and flowering

Design and combination options

The hosta 'Sum and Substance' can be easily combined with other shade plants. In combination with ferns, astilbes or trees, a harmonious and varied garden image is created. Their fresh green color is also particularly effective near water bodies such as ponds or streams. Due to its size and presence, it can work as a solitary plant, but is also a real eye-catcher in group plantings.

With its impressive size, large, glossy leaves and delicate, light purple flowers, hosta 'Sum and Substance' is an asset to any garden. Their ease of care and robustness make them the perfect choice for garden lovers who have little time for extensive gardening. This versatile plant is definitely worth considering if you want to add a special touch to your garden in July.
