Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree)

The Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense) is a broad, picturesque small tree that produces greenish-yellow flowers arranged in panicles. They appear in June. These produce black, round fruits. The Amur cork tree also has feathery, dark green leaves. In a sunny location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of about 15 m and a width of about 15 m.

The Amur cork tree is a broad-growing, picturesque small tree. It usually reaches a height of 10–15 m and a width of approx. 8–15 m. It generally grows 30–40 cm per year.

  • Growth: The Amur cork tree is a broad-growing, picturesque small tree. It usually reaches a height of 10–15 m and a width of approx. 8–15 m. It generally grows 30–40 cm per year.

  • Leaves: The deciduous leaves of the Amur cork tree are dark green, pinnate, and opposite. They are about 9–13 cm in size. Amur cork trees turn a bright golden yellow in autumn.
  • Bark: Cork-like, longitudinally furrowed bark.
  • Flowers: The greenish-yellow flowers of the Amur cork tree appear in panicles in June. They are about 10–12 cm in size.
  • Roots: Phellodendron amurense is a shallow-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms spreading, branched roots.Location: Prefers a sunny location.
  • Frost hardiness: The Amur cork tree is very frost hardy.

Care instructions

Pruning and saw cuts as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.A slow-release fertilizer can be used in spring. This releases nutrients slowly and continuously, ensuring that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
