Laying out paths in the garden

First, mark the path using a string (available at hardware stores) and wooden stakes. This will show you where the stones should be laid. Be sure to account for the width of any edging stones.

Next, cut along the marked edges with a spade and remove about 10 cm of soil. Once this base is laid, you can proceed with the individual steps for your path.

Garden paths can be built with or without a concrete foundation, which makes laying a simple garden path quite straightforward. However, it always depends on your individual preferences. Paths without a concrete foundation are simply laid with bark mulch.

For frequently used routes in your garden, often called "desire paths," you might consider incorporating their existing lines into your planned path. If you want two people to be able to walk side-by-side, a path width of at least 1.20 m is desirable. For a single person, 60 cm is sufficient.

Planned paths should never just end abruptly. It's important that the path has a clear route. Gently curved paths that integrate into the garden are particularly popular. A path that passes by a pond or a small fountain invites you to linger, as does a nice garden bench.

A property with a lawn looks even more beautiful when it includes a path. A gently curving path can be created as a DIY project. Paved paths can also be designed with a little practice, or a landscaping company can be hired to design them.

Path surfaces can be designed entirely to your taste. Bark mulch, gravel, chippings, and wood chips are very popular for garden paths. Garden paths are perfect for relaxation, leading you to a peaceful bench or a comfortable sun lounger. Your garden oasis truly becomes beautiful when you can reach it via a winding path.

Paths made of pavers with a multi-layered compacted sub-base are the most durable. For temporary paths, however, bark mulch is also suitable. Bark mulch is inexpensive and decomposes slowly.

Natural stones are more suited for professionals. Landscape gardeners often lay natural stones if desired. The result is always very appealing, but it also comes at a price. It's important to know that smaller pavers are easier to lay. This also makes it easier to change the width of paths later.

Stairs can also be integrated if necessary, which is particularly sensible on a steep slope. From a gradient of 7 percent, steps should definitely be included: leveling steps adapted to the terrain.

Flowers and shrubs along a garden path are pleasing to the eye and contribute to relaxation after a stressful day. The choice of surfacing for a garden path is ultimately a matter of taste and budget. However, the entire garden, including its paths, should appear harmonious.
